Vintage Cameo Love

This cameo is an example of very well done carving on shell. It is probably from Italy. Italy is well known for the expert carvers. The detail is exquisite.

This vintage cameo is also a hand carved item. The origin probably Italy. I think that it is a newer item, judging from the hairstyle. This one may have been personal, a likeness of the purchaser.

I have 3 vintage shell cameos, all from Italy. I really love the beauty and romance of this jewelry. These brooches are also convertible into pendants. The settings may be gold or sterling silver.

I recently found one at a thrift store locally. It is about 1 1/4" by 1". The carving is nice with an old tarnished gold mounting. I think that it will be fun to wear when I am feeling in a romantic mood.

The funny thing is that these can be purchased for less than new jewelry. My recommendation is that you check the mounting, and make certain it is real. The best way to learn...is to look at the good ones in a antique store.

Hot Chocolate Mix

via pinterest

I was looking for a really good recipe for homemade hot chocolate mix. I wanted one to use with hot water, to take camping, or give as a gift. I found the following recipe, by Alton Brown. It is a good basic recipe. I think that I can alter it with additional flavorings for variations.

Here it is on Food Network. Alton Brown Hot Chocolate Mix Recipe

Jewelry Making with Clay

Via Brave Girls Art School

I am having so much fun doing this online class. The jewelry class has several projects. Yesterday I played with clay and some old metal cuffs and bracelets that I found for this purpose. The great directions from the class videos and the tools for stamping the clay made this a fun, fun, fun, project. Check out the class at Brave Girls Club. The class is closed at this time, however, keep it in mind...there will be another one in the spring.

Wishing Everyone Happy Thanksgiving

It is getting late, and it will soon be bedtime. I have everything made and ready to go to Sis's tomorrow. I think that the Flourless Chocolate Cake is going to be fantastic! Hubby and I make a day trip to her home, and will get home in time to care for all our animals. Today, I have been thinking about all my blessings to be thankful for, and my gratitude. Truly blessed.

What Matters.....

.

This picture is from Brave Girls Camp. It is a mantra for someone. A friend sent me the following message that rings true for me....so I am sharing it with you.

There comes a point in your life when you realize..

Who matters
Who never did
Who won't anymore
And who always will
So, don't worry about people from your past.
There is a reason why they didn't make it to your future.

Flourless Chocolate Cake

Our American celebration of Thanksgiving is just 5 days from now. Our family gathers at one home and we all bring some of the food. I am going to make a dessert other than pumpkin pie (sis makes that). I normally make a New York Cheesecake, and some other people resist changing the menu. I think it is so...boring to eat the same food for 25+ years. I am a gal who is interested in making different things every year. I am thinking of a Flourless Chocolate Cake this year. I have not made this before, however I had a small piece at King Estate Vineyards wonderful restaurant. It was so....good! I am going to use this recipe www.food.com/recipe/flourless-chocolate-cake

Make your own Boot Cuffs

Have your noticed Boot Cuffs? I was researching how to make them and found out that there are many free knitting and crocheting patterns online. I also found that many crafty gals are using old sweater sleeves to make into boot cuffs. There is no foot part, but some gals are adding a strap that goes under the arch of the foot...thus stopping the cuffs from sliding up the leg. These cuffs have the handmade flowers pinned on them...cute. i got an idea from looking at this pic, how about taking some heavy boot socks and cutting off the foot to use. They don't need to be long, but that is a personal choice. If the boots fit pretty tight there may not be much room for bulky cuffs.

Winner of Give-a-way

Wild Turkeys on the Farm

Today, a flock of 20 wild Turkeys were in our lower field on the farm. They were really hungry, eating on green grass (recently fertilized) as fast as they could. We do not see the turkeys frequently, they pass across the farm pretty quickly, or they stay hidden in our timbered acres. Hubby did shoot a large male turkey and our lab (Radar) got the retrieve his first turkey.

November Dutch Oven Thanksgiving

Mountain Pass Dutch Oven cooks, here in Oakridge, Oregon had the November gathering on Saturday. The theme was Thanksgiving, just two weeks early. We enjoyed many side dishes, and a turkey cooked in a very large dutch oven. The two pots in the front of this photo are the ones hubby and I made yesterday. The left one is a onion, Swiss cheese, and bread recipe. The one on the right is excellent, butternut squash and apples seasoned with cinnamon, butter and brown sugar. I always get requests for the recipe, and compliments.

Vintage 1920's W.M. Thompson Print

I have such a difficult time trying to resist a good junking expedition. At times it can be a big time waste. Really....many times the effort is fruitless. Today was a great success! Yes! This photo is of a vintage W.M. Thompson print, please disregard the reflection in the lower left side. These were printed in the 1920's and 1930's. They are found in many sizes...a print such as this can be pretty large, say 24" x 30". They were also made smaller and part of the image is cut off, often for calenders, maybe 6" x 8". I found this framed print in the small size in the vintage frame at the thrift store for $5.49. A great deal indeed! My sis collects these prints and I often shop with her for them, so I know what the price would be at an antique dealer. She must have 20 to 25 of various prints, of many sizes. I know that this is something she does not have. It will make a great gift! Yay! Love it when this happens!!

A Distant Music by B.J. Hoff

via pinterest

I starting reading a novel today, A Distant Music, by B.J. Hoff. I was just a few pages into the novel and this prose caught my attention...I read it 4 times, savoring the beauty of the words. She is talking about the music of a silver flute.

via pinterest

"The music was...a glory. A wondrous thing entirely. Sometimes it was like a graceful bird, winging up and over the clouds. Other times it was more like shiny coins tumbling out of an angel's knapsack. And sometimes--- and to Maggie these were the best times of all---it was like a happy waterfall, pouring down from heaven itself over the town" B.J. Hoff

These words paint a glorious picture in my mind's eye. May you enjoy this!

Brave Girl Club Camp II

The last evening of camp, we were each asked to tell the group our wishes for them (as in the group).  My wish for the others is pretty simple, and really important to yourself as I see it. My wish is that you be kind, gentle, caring, and loving to yourself.

You see...as I know, most of us are really pretty terrible and mean to ourselves. Our inner voices will say things like stupid, dumb, fat, ugly,......you see what I mean. Stop yourself when that starts, be nice to yourself, you are doing the best you can under the circumstances.

Mary Jane Butters Farmhouse

This is your first view of the farmhouse from the road out of Moscow Idaho. The farmhouse is in the middle left of the photo. That small white dot above it is a wall tent...part of the B & B. I had binoculars with me and could see it very clearly. The location is spectacular!

This is the home and workplace of Mary Jane Butters. It is 4 stories tall, and is designed to resemble a grain elevator, common to the area. The siding is even the steel used on the commercial grain elevator buildings. I think that the siding is a very clever idea....very little maintenance, and no painting.

This photo shows how the clouds shade the area, the farmhouse is in the photo.

Another view.
Well, all you Farmgirls...are you curious about Mary Jane's Farm. I was. When I was near her home October 19th 2012, I went by and took these photos with my cell. They aren't very good..but I wanted to share them with you. Mary Jane was in S California at that time.
