Enjoying My Ukulele

Wednesday, March 27, 2013

I really like this vintage photo. They are posing in the snow...in these  costumes. I would guess that these girls might have been in a talent show or something along that line.

These girls are the Boswell Sisters, I can see that they look like a family. I like their hairstyle with the curl on their forehead. Pretty cute photo.

Finally, this Norman Rockwell Saturday Evening Post from Sept 22, 1928 is pretty special. I do notice that in all of these vintage photos the hairstyles of the era. 1920's..short...flapper...modern girl!!

I am enjoying the ukulele, I think that many people can learn it. If you have ever played a guitar, the ukulele has just 4 strings and the fingering chords are simple to learn. You can find an small soprano instrument for about $50 to $75 and there are plenty of online resources to assist in learning.

Planting Veggie Starts

Tuesday, March 26, 2013

I am back to blogging today. I completed the income taxes, and I am happy to report that we are getting a very small refund...Yay, most year's it is writing out a check to the IRS.

See this photo, I decided to go ahead and purchase 2 6-packs of Broccoli and Cauliflower today. I had time to plant them too. I am going to wait a while before I grow some Snow Pea starts and get them planted. The weather will be unsettled for a few weeks still.

I purchased a few bags of potting soil, for the patio pots. The perennials that I am going to transplant into them are coming up and it is a perfect time to get the pots going. I have a new plan for the patio this year, small 12" daylilies. The deer have not been eating them at all...therefore a new planting idea. I am growing more of the seed (from the daylilies), and dividing the larger plants, to add to the yard.

Technology Update!!

Banana Bread French Toast

Via Pinterest
I just saw these photos on Pinterest and boy, they look so good. Tomorrow, I am making some Banana Bread, to use for my own french toast.

I am still working to get the laptop and printer to talk to each other....ugh, and there are only 3 weeks until taxes are due. Turbo Tax is waiting for me.

Of course life goes on, house cleaning, laundry, cooking, dishes and shopping.....blah, blah, blah, a person never catches up......and then I have to spend 2 or 3 days doing the technology waltz. I skipped a fun Vintage Faire at Molly Mo's today because of the ongoing stuff at home.

Pretty Vintage Easter Postcards

Friday, March 22, 2013

Enjoy these pretty postcards from yesteryear...lovely! I have been having problems with my laptop and printer, the wifi connection between them isn't working right now. I am working on a fix. I did get my laptop to connect to both networks today, that is one problem fixed. Both the laptop and printer are on the same network, but I am having trouble with the print queue online. Now, I have uninstalled the printer...and am going to reinstall it. I hope that it works...

Decorate Your Clothes Pins

Thursday, March 21, 2013

I follow a blog The Beehive Cottage. Today's post is about some of her new crafts that she sells on Etsy. I think that these decorated clothes pins are darling. I am going to play around making a few to use in my studio. I think that my girlfriends would love to have some, a cute little gift idea.

Sisters on the Fly

I am now official Sister #3525. I am very excited!! Their motto is We have more fun than anyone! Things are coming together. Yay!!!

A Lantern for Prairie Flower

Tuesday, March 19, 2013

I decided to use portable lighting for Prairie Flower. The auto battery for power is dead, so it was buy another or do something else. LED lights are really good, great light and long lasting with regular batteries...122 hours of light with 4 D batteries. No old, vintage lantern for this farmgirl....a new Coleman battery operated LED fits the need very well. I think that the style that resembles a vintage lantern is nice. I will have a couple small LED flashlights with me in the trailer and I am ready.  I think that I will bring along 2 or 3 jar candles to have on hand.

Fresh Water for Prairie Flower

Monday, March 18, 2013

I found the way to have fresh water in Flower. There is no fresh water tank and water pump, so I knew that  problem was just fine with me. In fact, I am happy that I will not need to deal with those features. I found a vintage Coleman Water Cooler just like this photo...today. I think that it holds about 3 gallons. I think that is enough, because I can refill it as needed. There is a little rust and 2 small dents in the green metal. The inside is excellent, and the spout is working. After cleaning it well, and using some bleach in the wash water...I am happy with it. Hey...there is one for sale on Ebay for more than $50.

Be Your Own Heroine...

Saturday, March 16, 2013

This Brave Girl message for today spoke to me very personally. I make an attempt daily to see the good side of things, and of people. I want to believe that people are doing the best that they can...but my heart tells me that it isn't true. I know people very well who get enjoyment from making others lives miserable. I make an attempt to remove people who are like this from my life, however that is not always possible. An example is that just 2 days ago a person spared no criticism about my little trailer, Prairie Flower...saying that it is just a crazy idea...and that I will never go thru with my dream. See the part above about being misunderstood, plotted against, and betrayed! That is where I find myself. I take that as a personal challenge, and I will take Flower out as much as I can. I will be true to me! She did it anyway!

Bee Keeping!

Thursday, March 14, 2013

Note the hollow logs in this vintage photo of Uncle Dan.

Aunt Fanny uses hollow logs, up in her holler.

I am joining the ranks of bee keeping next month. Hubby and I have been thinking about this for several years, however, we have not committed to the activity. He talked with a friend of his that has a hive in a small town backyard, and was convinced that it is a good thing to do. We have a problem with getting our garden pollinated, because there are not many native bees around early for the apples and pear trees. Now is the time to get the hive set up and ready for the bees...coming in April.

Pruning Apple Trees

Wednesday, March 13, 2013

This is just the prettiest watercolor of an apple tree during pruning. Guess what I did today, yes, I had the loppers and the ladder out in the garden. The golden delicious apple needed a good trimming. Last summer the limbs were too long and the fruit too heavy. The result was almost broken limbs on the tree and a problem. I hope that now I will have short limbs that I will be able to remove the extra fruit by thinning. Next, I will do a dormant spray because I have scab and worms to get rid of.  I want to have large, nice apples next fall.

Dutch Oven Cooking - Cheesy Potatoes

Monday, March 11, 2013

March Dutch Oven Cooking...I made these cheesy potatoes. A new recipe for me. I didn't take my usual photo while it was fresh in the pot. Here is a photo on a plate to show you. The potatoes were from my garden last summer, still very good after storage. The recipe is really good, and received many compliments. Yay, that's what every cook wants!

Recipe for Cheesy Potatoes

8 medium Yukon Gold Potatoes, peeled and diced
1/2 stick margarine
1 can Cream of Chicken Soup
1 small onion diced
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 cup sour cream
1 5 ounce can evaporated milk

Directions - Melt the margarine in the dutch oven, add all the ingredients into the oven and mix well. Cook at 350 for about 45 minutes to one hour, until the potatoes are done. Be careful with the bottom heat, this will burn if too hot.  Enjoy the Yummy!

Snow is Fun

Wednesday, March 6, 2013

Yes, snow is fun...sometimes. This vintage photo from pinterest caught my eye. The college women from a bygone time...wearing skirts.  Snow shoes are pretty difficult to use in this area, you see, we have very heavy wet snow. Heavy snow wears a person out in no time at all. If there is a packed trail, it isn't bad. I have never tried it, not so interested with our type of snow...we call it Willamette cement. Got the idea. Today we had a light snowfall, but there is none on the ground. Yay!! And believe it or not...I have a hummingbird feeder up, we often have a really early male Rufous Hummingbird...migration is going on, and there have been some birds along the Oregon coast.

What Makes You Smile?

Tuesday, March 5, 2013

For me, the answer is easy, a drive in my sports car. Top up or down, it doesn't matter....I smile. Yep, I grin with sheer delight. Yesterday, I took the cover off and backed out of the shop. I bundled up and put the top down...after all it was sunny and 63 outside. I keep the windows up and turn on the heater, I was just fine. I haven't driven her in almost 3 months.  I finally named her, Trixie. The car gets pretty good MPG, about 30. I saw some guys on motorcycles, a touch of early spring fever? You bet!

Taming the Marionberry Row Today

Sunday, March 3, 2013

This is a photo of my Marionberry Row about June 1. Marionberry is a highbred berry, from three different berries. It is a product of Oregon State University in the 1950's. The fruit is excellent. The rows require work. One of the original berries used in the highbred is the native cascade blackberry. Thus, these canes need yearly work to keep them from overtaking a garden. All of these year old lush fruit bearing canes die during the winter, then they must be pruned out and the new canes (that are all over the place) must be put onto the trellis that I have here. The canes have very sharp thorns, and I use heavy leather gloves. Ouch! Even with leather gloves I always get some thorns thru them. Today, I wrestled, and pruned, and trellised the new canes. I usually do this work early after the snow is gone, on a nice day. I feel that a big job is accomplished when finished. YAY!

Strawberry and Chocolate Shortcake

Saturday, March 2, 2013

My oh my, I am thinking about this delicious dessert. I have made this with my daughter. The recipe is from one of Susan Branch's cookbooks. The chocolate shortcake is pretty easy to make...and with fresh, right out of the garden strawberries...........ahhhh. Yummy, Divine, Wonderful, Special, and Heavenly.

You see, I worked in the garden today. Cleaning out and pruning things, and I looked at my strawberry plants.....that started it. There is no strawberry from a store that tastes like mine!
