What are you reading?

Friday, December 26, 2014

I have not seen any of the starz series, so I am reading the books first. I purchased the entire 7 book series for my Nook. It is over 7000 pages, so I think that will take the rest of the winter to read.  What book or books do you recommend? Just wondering? By the way, I love my Nook Color...I can use it as a regular Tablet.

Have a Merry Little Christmas

Thursday, December 25, 2014

I wish that I was in this sled, but no, I am at home with about 3" of snow here. It has been a merry little Christmas.

Time to make Cookies!

Sunday, December 21, 2014

Oh, these look so good! I just want to make them right now. I have an old cookie press that belonged to Mom. I try to use it this time of year. The cookies bring back memories from almost 60 years ago, of these cookies....mom made them often for my siblings and I. Her recipe was made with shortening, white sugar, and vanilla. This recipe is from the Internet, it has cream cheese, butter and orange zest in it. Good!

Decorate the House

Friday, December 19, 2014

OK, these are not my photos...they are from Pinterest. I think that the deer are really fun. I could do it, if I had any deer..............  That said, I admit to having way too much Christmas decor in clear tubs, in the storage room....stacked 4 high...8 in all. I can not use all of them at one time, so I rotate the stuff. I don't want to get rid of any of it, some of it dates back to the 1970's.

Today was tree day, the lights and ornaments are all on it. Tomorrow, other decorations around the house. It always takes so long to put the stuff up, I just keep putting things on the tree until I am bored. I seems to work just fine. Sometimes I think that a pre-lite artificial tree would be good, then I don't have to watch the water, and consider the fire danger.

I think that my Mom had it made, she sent the kids (us) out to a tree farm to pick out a tree. We hauled it home, put it in the stand, brought it in and decorated it.  Then we took it all down on New Years Day. Yeah...she had it made!

Vintage Trailer Skirt

Sunday, December 14, 2014

I came across this post on Facebook today. I am now regretting passing up 2 square dancing petticoats during the sale of Halloween costumes at Goodwill. BTW, next Halloween I will be looking for these...I think that the stores hold these for the holiday. I think that I could some up with a better idea for the jeans. Just a fun idea for today!

Just Be Happy.

Friday, December 12, 2014

You know girlfriends....sometimes all it takes is a couple of fun bracelets to lift spirits.  The day may be difficult, and the workplace a toxic environment....so just find a small thing or two to bring a smile and enjoy.

A Surprise Apple Pie

Thursday, December 11, 2014

I was home alone all day, today. Honestly...I love it. I have peace and quiet...just the way I like it. Well, the master bathroom needed a good cleaning. Did I do that? NO
I decided to make a surprise for Hubby. His favorite, Apple Pie!

My method for the best pie is to use the Martha Stewart pie crust. The secret, chilling everything for at least an hour. My filling is homemade canned apple pie filling (from my apple tree). I don't like the fresh apple method...in fact if I use fresh apples, I cook the filling on the stove before making the pie. That way the filling is not all runny. It is like this pie.

Christmas Tree Time

Sunday, December 7, 2014

It is the time of the year for getting a Christmas Tree. The tree farm next door has been very busy for about three weeks.  I don't know how many have been cut, wrapped and loaded up. A lot! There have been 5 or 6 truck trailer loads removed at this time. I am talking about the 40 foot long haul trucks. I understand that these trees are headed to San Francisco Bay area. The Mexican workers are out in all weather, working about 15 hours each day.

The weather was dry and warm (60), the time was right. Hubby had already picked out the two trees to cut. He drove the tractor over to the tree farm, and we cut the trees. Yay!

University of Oregon - Ducks

Saturday, December 6, 2014

We are big University of Oregon fans here. I graduated from there in 1974 with a Bachelors of Science. This area is crazy, wild, about the Ducks. Last night the Ducks won the Pac 12 championship. The score was Oregon 51 vs Arizona Wildcats 13. An excellent game, the Ducks took the title easily. Now the fans need to wait a few days to see what Bowl Game they will be playing. I am hoping for The Rose Bowl! Oh and BTW, Walt Disney gave his express permission for the Ducks to use his Donald Duck character...long ago.

GO Ducks!

Homemade Dog Treats

Thursday, December 4, 2014

I like to make dog treats for our Lab, Radar. He really likes the ones I make, the recipe I use has peanut butter as a main ingredient. I found this new recipe on a blog and I want to share with you. Here is a link for you, Homemade Dog Treats. Your dog will thank you and do all the tricks he knows for one of these.

What to do with all those plastic bags.........

Monday, December 1, 2014

Today, I took on the task of cleaning and organizing my crafting studio. Plastic bags are a problem, sure... I recycle them. I do like to have a few on hand in my vintage trailer. I found this idea on pinterest....and looked at the blog that showed how to do this. I think that this is a terrific idea. So, I want to share with you....Polka Dot Pineapple has all the instructions. I am going to fold up some of bags around here.

Vintage Cards for Thanksgiving 2014

Thursday, November 27, 2014

I am thankful and grateful for the past year. We are all doing pretty well. Everyone has survived... the accidents, sicknesses, and other medical issues. We will have a simple midday turkey dinner here on High Prairie. The six of us gathered around the table together another year. I understand that all people have struggles and issues, it is just the way life is. I am blessed...and I know it. I am grateful and thankful.

Pumpkins and Chickens

Monday, November 24, 2014

This pretty cupboard is an inspiration to me. It is time to get out my boxes of Thanksgiving decor and put it out for the holiday.

I have a card table set up in my studio, with the hanging light fixture on it. I have been taking it apart to see what needs to be done. I have decided that I need a plug to temporarily wire to it, so I can determine exactly what wiring needs to be done. I am hoping that it is in working condition, because that will make my project pretty easy. The major change that I want to make is to turn it over, so that the lights are pointed up toward the ceiling. I read several DIY directions that show how to change it, and the project is within my ability. The light fixture only cost me $3.50 so I don't have to worry about breaking it. Vintage Surfing Tablecloth

Saturday, November 22, 2014

You probably know that I love vintage tablecloths and other textiles. These items are very attractive to me, and much so when they are made in the USA 70 years ago. They do survive, and I find them from time to time in thrift stores. My Sis took me to an out of the way store in a very small town. My eye's are always looking for this kind of thing...they are well trained. This cloth is small, about a 36" square. My friend Debbie has her trailer decorated in a Tiki theme, and this is perfect for her....next time I see her she is going to get this one. I owe her an I'm sorry gift (for something I accidentally broke).

DIY Painting an old Brass Chandelier

Thursday, November 20, 2014
via Pinterest

I have seen these old light fixtures repainted and made to look very good at some antique stores recently. I looked through Pinterest and found some good ideas and links to find out how this is done. It is pretty simple...Find a used light in great shape, get it for less than $10....use good quality spray paint....add chandelier crystals....voila! Something wonderful has happened!

OK, this light is going to be used in my small studio, and needs to be a smaller size that hangs above my head...hitting it with my head is not a good idea. I have been watching for a good one at the thrift stores lately, and finally found one for $3.50...with all the parts included. Yes, I can play around with this! Mine is going to be white/cream sort of color, with some vintage chandelier crystals hanging from it. I can't wait to get started...however the weather is too cold for painting right now.

I will have a post about this project sometime when I can get it done.

Homemade Pumpkin Nut Bread

Wednesday, November 12, 2014

This time of year I like to make my homemade Pumpkin Nut Bread. It is pretty easy to make, and it freezes well. The flavor is so good, there is plenty of cinnamon and ground cloves in the recipe, everyone loves it. I had to figure out how to use the fresh puree...it seems that all the recipes use commerically canned puree. I make pie custard with the fresh puree for custard cups or pie. I found that my recipes do not need the water that is usually in the ingredient list.

But....first I have to process the pie pumpkins I grew during the summer. I cut the pumpkins in half, clean out the seeds/strings, bake cut side down on a cookie sheet for about 40 minutes, until tender. I allow the cooked pumpkin to cool, then I scoop out the pumpkin and puree in my food processor. Freeze the puree for baking, or use right away.

Vintage White Pottery

Saturday, November 8, 2014

All images are from Pinterest.

I have been collecting the white pottery items from mid-century manufacturer's for about 5 years now.  All my items have come from thrift stores, and I never pay much for them. I focused on this color because it is the easiest to find...I think that there were many more made of this color. I used them at my daughter's wedding 3 years ago, and the variety of styles looked great. All kinds of flowers look good in this color. It is difficult to find out the maker, as many were not marked McCoy but are....they did not mark very much I have found, except that the USA mark on the bottom. I have looked and held enough of these items to tell the real deal. I have my collection (30) stacked all over the living room. It is time to organize them....so that they have the attention they deserve. I am leaning to get a tall, white, distressed bookcase, or a cabinet. Whatever I choose much be very sturdy, because I don't want to have things fall off.

Getting the Sparkle Back

Thursday, November 6, 2014

I know a woman that is suffering from lost my sparkle syndrome. (my term)  I am so very sorry for her. I know that she needs to get care, and meds for depression. She doesn't believe that this is needed, and rejects that idea. What to do to help? She is so sad and the winter weather affects her too.  Hum.....the only big suggestion I have is to use Vitamin D, and take it everyday, at a dose of 4000. It is inexpensive and does help a great deal, and no doctor involvement. What do you think?

Loving Vintage Dishes

Monday, November 3, 2014

I admit that I love.....vintage....dishes. There are so many beautiful floral and hand painted plates and sets I see. I found a few place settings for my daughters wedding three years ago. I love eye candy, and I have so much crammed into my studio room, 26 pretty dishes hanging on the walls. Most are hand painted, and all have pretty floral designs. There are a few of my MIL's teacup and saucer collection on a shelf. The majority of the collection are still packed in a box for her granddaughters to have. Well, it has been 10+ years that the box has been stored, I think that the time has come....

Happy Halloween!

Friday, October 31, 2014

This is a giant pumpkin that I took a photo of a couple of years ago. I have no kids coming here, we are just too far out in the country for giving out treats.

Countdown to Halloween

These are some images I found online... black cats seem to be a theme in many vintage cards.

Where Is My Tribe?

Friday, October 24, 2014

Where is my tribe hiding? I am lonely and tired of my lack of friends.  I have been searching for the like minded women for my tribe. Where are you?

Yesterday, I watched online videos telling me how to keep mice out of my trailer. My selection of trapping to kill the little beasts, and block all entry points is clearly the best. This is what I am coming to! What..............the .......

A Vintage Trailer with a Quote

Wednesday, October 22, 2014

This is found on the side of a girlfriends 10' Compact 1962 Aloha Trailer.
I didn't know the Aloha made a trailer smaller than my 13' trailer. She and her hubby restore 2 or 3 vintage trailers each year. They do a great job.

Here is the door side of her trailer, it has a tiny kitchen in the front, a couple of small cabinets on each side, and the table/bed across the back. After dark, she has a large light-up crown to put on top of her trailer. The crown came from Lowe's, they sell them online for about $50.

This an Aloha Compact is the original condition, after being stored in a barn for 40-50 years. This gal was so lucky, this trailer was given to her...just because the man wanted to have it off his place. How about that? I know another gal who got a trailer in a similar deal, her trailer cost a case of beer.

The Kids Travel to Hong Kong

Monday, October 20, 2014

My daughter and her hubby made a trip to Hong Kong a month ago for a vacation. They shared these photos with me and I think that my followers may enjoy them. This is a gondola that they took up into the mountains. It had a clear floor so that a person could see the forest underneath.

This is a beautiful outdoor photo,  of Sun Pat city. The contrast of the modern high rise buildings, and a old boat is interesting. The vibrant colors are amazing.

This is a huge Buddha on Lantau Island. They saw this from the gondola. The Buddha is very old, and notice the lush tropical forest. The trees small size in contrast the the statue shows the enormous size. It was hot and humid the entire time they visited.

They flew home on 9/11....I was very happy to get the call that they were in San Francisco, USA. Happy!

What Makes You Sparkle?

Thursday, October 16, 2014

It's so worth it to figure out what brings the sparkle into your eyes.  Find out what really lights you up and search for more of that in your life. Then be true to you!

This is very true for all of us...sometimes we need a little reminding............

Belknap Hot Springs Glamping

Tuesday, October 14, 2014

Here we are at Belknap Hot Springs Resort. Prairie Flower is parked right beside Artie.

This beauty is a complete professional restoration. A 1957 trailer, Must Love Dogs, so pretty.

This little cutie is restored. I don't know the name or year, but she is very nice. The awning is wonderful.

This vintage 1960's Airstream is named Helen Wheels! Get it...Hell on Wheels. It is a completely restored beauty.

This trailer is truly vintage...1947. It had been stored in a barn and was in great condition when the owner found it. She restored some things, but it is mostly original.

There are more trailers for another post. This group of women that met here for the 3rd year in a row...and most have reserved their sites for 2015. Well...and let me say that they are most protective of their personal sites. If someone takes their site...it is a big faux pas. I didn't make a reservation for 2015, all the sites are spoken for by the ladies of the club.

There were about 40 gals there. I was a bit overwhelmed by the shear number, too many to remember every one's name. This group is a number of women who decided to leave Sisters on the Fly. Why? SOTF have so many rules and regulations that must be followed. They have a yearly membership of $60, and then you are expected to pay more at every event. So...we Oregonians are independent...and the group is doing very well.

Hum...that said, I rather like camping, and not resorts with a large group...and a high price per night, for a tiny site with very close neighbors. The tent trailer was right beside me, with their table 10' from my trailer door.  I will need to think about this group for next year...it certainly is better than the Drunks and Dogs.
