Yes, absolutely. I saw this happen myself. I think there are three reasons why narcissists become more dangerous as they get older:
- Over the years, they hurt more and more people, which makes them feel more shame. To hide that shame, they keep doing bad things to protect their "False Self." It all starts to build up. Think of every bad thing they do as a brick. Now imagine carrying 60 or 70 years' worth of bricks!
- Narcissists always think they’re the victim. So, when people react normally to their bad behavior, they feel even more like the victim. This feeling adds up over time. They push people away and don’t understand why everyone leaves them. Near the end of my covert mother's life, she thought her life was awful and that she was the world’s biggest victim. My dad gave her everything, and she had a good life, but she would have told you a completely different story.
- As they get older and their mind declines, they lose control of their impulses. If they were a covert narcissist, they can’t hide their bad behavior as easily. They feel more entitled and act out even more.
