The Bears and the Bees: Protecting Backyard Hives

Remember that I told you about the large male Black Bear that is hanging out nearby?

He found our garden and bee hives. He broke down the fencing and went into the garden. 90% of the apples are gone, eaten by the bear. There is bear sign all over inside the garden. He found the 3 bee hives that are inside the garden. There are muddy paw prints on the sides of all three hives, and one was tipped over against another. Thankfully, the hive held together...and he didn't get inside the hive.

He will return to get the bees and honey...maybe tonight.

So...we called the Oregon Dept of Fish and Wildlife. The next several hours were spent putting up a new electric fence around the bee hives. We put out a trail camera, to take pics of the bear. Lastly, we have put out 3 wireless motion alarms to get warning of an animal inside the garden.

Maybe the electric fence will send the bear running away from the garden and maybe keep him away....I am not holding my breath.

There may be another blog post about the bear...coming soon.

Update - I just remembered that we have about 8 bee boxes full of honey, to be harvested....inside the shop. The door is wide open....OMG. Those boxes must be moved tomorrow morning.
