I Love Vintage Quilts

Friday, January 8, 2021

I do have a love of old quilts. On occasion I will purchase one, and they can be a rare find. Today, I added this pretty quilt to my small collection.

My very first quilt was made by my great grandmother, she pieced the top. The fabric backing was still with the top. I put these pieces together as a teen. I believe that her work was done during the WWII years. I have not used the quilt, just saved it.

Quilts just didn't survive the heavy use by families. They were utilitarian by nature. Putting old fabric clothing back to use. When they became rags, the fabric was reused.

Finding an old quilt that is in reasonable condition is not a common thing. Most are falling apart, big holes, hanging by a thread. That old cotton fabric doesn't age well, it actually deteriorates eventually, and the fabric cannot take a machine wash.

This sweet quilt is dated from the 1940's, by the fabric colors and designs. It is incredibly clean...it has been well cared for...I wonder why the donation to a thrift store. The binding of the edges is only barely there, and one small spot on an edge needs some restoration.

My inspection confirmed that this quilt was going home to live with me! I am $95 poorer, but I love it!
