Do you remember this??? I sure do, the experience of walking door to door selling these cookies to complete strangers. I detested doing it...and by myself. It is a miracle that nothing bad happened to me. I actually feel sorry for girls scouts doing this. If I am personally asked by a girl, I will purchase a box. What about you?? Good, Bad, or Ugly??
Girl Scouts did have a green bag just like this one, but it had a Girl Scout logo instead of the Red Cross on my bag. I haven't found a GS bag...so this one will do for my project. I got out my needle and thread...and hand sewed these patches on it. I can remove the patches at any time. This nice, roomy, cross-body bag will be great for Flea Markets. Cute, unique, and all mine! :)
I found this one-of-a-kind vintage 1949 skiing metal at the thrift store a few days ago. I took a close look at it....and you know me....for a couple of dollars it came home with me. I am not certain what I will do with it. In time the ideas will come to me. For now, I am going to display it. I am really looking for a Boy Scout kerchief slide. There were so many made that I think I will find one.
I am always on the watch for vintage Girl Scout stuff. I don't want to use my personal items for crafting, they are my own collectibles. I will display them. I have found 2 old books. I purchased some GS badges last year and now have a project for them. Coming up soon.....
The thrift store provided a wonderful find today. A first edition, 1920, Scouting for Girls Book. Most women of my generation were Girl Scouts, a commonality here in the USA. Other countries have Girl Guides, and other names for similar organizations. I did research on the internet...and I am very happy to say that this book is the real thing. The inside cover shows the young girls name and dates inside the book. A 95 year old book, I am going to read it soon. If it is valuable...I may sell it to a bookstore. There is probably a collector that would love to have the book. A fun find!
This picture is very nostalgic for me. I enjoyed growing up as a Girl Scout. I felt a wonderful sense of belonging and developing into the person I am. I don't remember these camp uniforms. I remember a white shirt with a dark green short...green knee socks. This picture could be timeless...except for the accordion...I don't know anyone who plays one. I noticed the girl playing a ukulele. Back in my day, I played a guitar. I still have my guitar, and play it, and enjoy the same songs from the campfire.
I am looking forward to this summer!!
There is not much to blog about recently. However, I went junking today and found this vintage 1957 Betty Crocker's Cook Book for Boys and Girls, for 99 cents. I did a little online research and found the book sells for about $20 at the used booksellers. I was surprised to see that it was reproduced in 1983. There are some fun ideas, and maybe I will try a couple. It is kinda funny that I could have had a book like this as a small child. There are some lovely color photos and many great illustrations. I remember making the doughboys on sticks as a girl scout.
I am proud to say that I was a Girl Scout. I belonged every school year, Brownies, Juniors, Cadettes, and Seniors. I have my sash with many badges, and pins. I have the songbook pictured above, and some other memorabilia. I know that my membership in Scouting had much influence on creating the adult woman I am. My family moved all the time, Dad was in the Air Force. Scouting was available to me, at all the locations. I had a stable place with Girl Scouting. I was accepted and encouraged. I learned leadership and spread my wings!
