Prairie Flower Stays at East Lake, part 2

Sunday, July 28, 2013

This is Prairie Flower's license plate and frame. You will know me on the road!

This is the campsite at East Lake. I made the lace panel for a pretty screen door, I must keep the bugs outside.

This is a closeup to see the pretty lace that I used. This is a simple DIY project. The lace came in a good width, so I just used it as it came. A simple pocket along the top, to put a small tension rod through. The bottom is finished with a white lace pocket. I used clear glass bits for weight, and sewed them in sections for distribution. My creation worked very well, and I am most happy with it. Use your creativity to make one your own.  I got the idea from pinterest where a gal used lace in the trailer screens to pretty them up.

Prairie Flower Visits East Lake

Friday, July 26, 2013

Here is the beach side camp site view. It is very nice to sit under some small trees in the shade on this beach. During the day, there are many families playing in the water. Fishing boats, kayaks, and other water craft abound. The Newberry Caldera is similar to the Crater Lake National Park. This is the lake inside an old volcano, and the elevation is 6800 feet. I had to be very careful outside here, the sun and elevation make the UVA and UVB rays extremely strong.

This view is from Paulina Peak, at an elevation of 7847 feet...pretty darn high unless you are a mountain climber. East Lake is to the right, and Paulina Lake is on the left.

Another view from the peak, these are the main volcanic mountains in Central Oregon. The Three Sisters, and Mount Jefferson on the right... the photo isn't as pretty, as the view is a little smokey.

This view is of East Lake, with the Big Obsidian Flow (only 1300 years old) very visible in the foreground.

The Newberry Caldera is about 25 miles south of Bend, Oregon. It is a National Monument, created in 1990. The elevation is much higher than many other lakes in the area. It is much cooler during the day than Bend. The earliest resort, East Lake, was established in 1915. I think that it was quite a trek to reach the area. People would spend 2 to 4 weeks at the lodge, and enjoy the hot springs and great fishing.

I spent the first 3 days at a Camptown Girls gathering at Paulina Lake. The campsite was not good, just a boring parking lot with many, many, mosquito's. Some gals were really bitten pretty badly. Then I moved to a lakeside campsite at East Lake Campground. The difference was amazing, a wonderful beach, lovely weather, and no mosquito's! It was difficult to pack up and leave this morning...

I will return next summer, this place is too nice to forget.

Gone Camping with Camptown Girls

This is the Newberry Caldera in Central Oregon. I am camping at the far lake in this photo. I will be back with new photos to show you.

Hum....thinking about a new camera...

Sunday, July 21, 2013

My current camera is an old model Kodak Easyshare. It still works well, but is outdated. It is difficult to download and photoshop pictures,  I am looking at this Nikon, I want a good point and shoot camera, without spending more than $300. I want to get better photos for the blog.

Wow, This Lake is Great!

The Last Runaway - A Great Summer Book

Wednesday, July 17, 2013

Hi, do you need a good book to read this summer. I highly recommend this book to you. You can probably find it used, or get one on your Kindle or Nook.  I enjoyed the book very much!

Oregon Sugar Pod Peas

Monday, July 15, 2013

The garden is producing!  The Oregon Sugar Pod Peas are doing very well, and I am picking many every day.  I like that these are easily frozen for the off-season. I only have to blanch them for 2 minutes, put them into ice water to cool for 2-3 minutes. Then I drain them and dry them on clean kitchen towels. When that is done, I put them onto a cookie sheet and place in the freezer. About 2 hours later they will be frozen. Finally, I put them into freezer bags...and into the big freezer they go. I like that these can be sauteed without thawing...into the right size for your needs. Simple and easy...no hot canner and long hours putting these up.

Skin Cancer Part 2

This is what I look like 2 days after surgery. I am pretty bruised, and swollen. The spot was about 1/8th inch, but the result is pretty serious. A Basal cell carcinoma. This is not a trivial thing, sun is dangerous.

Deer Resistant Plant - Daylilies...I love 'em

Thursday, July 11, 2013
from P Allen Smith

This is good information for everyone who would like to divide their daylilies. Why, you ask...do this? Well, you can make your plants more rigorous, and have many more of the same kind in your landscape. The price is only your labor, and the results are good. I do this to expand my daylilies around my home. A good thing! The deer normally do not like them.

Let's Go Camping!

Tuesday, July 9, 2013

Oh yeah! Bring it on....the hay is in the barn, the cattle are on the pasture. Today's skin cancer is gone (for now)! Just raid the refrigerator, freezer, and pantry. We don't need anything special...just a lakeside camping spot that is cooler than here.

Laugh....

Monday, July 8, 2013

I snapped this today, it is from a small plaque. I was inspired by the image. I have laughed uncontrollably...it is great. I remember some of those times, and I still have a private laugh. I hope that you also remember some of your own!

My posts may slow down, I am having "too much fun" to stop and write about all of it. Tomorrow...I have the skin cancer removed, and then the fun begins again.

Happy Independence Day

Thursday, July 4, 2013

I know that my education about the history of the USA is missing many important facts.  I watched a documentary on the Revolutionary War yesterday. I was surprised to learn that only about 1/3 of the males who were allowed to vote at that time were supportive of the separation of the USA from England. That is certainly much different than I believed. I believed that an overwhelming majority of men were supportive of the revolution.

Anyway....Happy 4th of July!! Hear's to the Red, White and Blue!!!

Granite Mountain Hotshots

Tuesday, July 2, 2013

This tragic event has been on my mind for the last several days. I am a retired Forest Service woman. My first few years of work I was required to be a fire fighter when the situation was extreme. I could not fathom the desire to do that work for a living. I did it enough to know that I hated fire fighting. I felt no exhilaration, or enticement for the work. I hated being told that I had to do it...for a week or two...to give up my life, and my choices and to be subject to the extreme risk.

My location only hires young people right out of high school graduation and going to college. No one really understands the extreme danger. They think of it as an exciting adventure, glorified, glamorous, and making much money for college. Admittedly, the best work this little town has to offer its Grads.

I would never, and have never encouraged anyone to become a fire fighter...it is frankly a bad risk. I would never have had my child in this danger.

That said, thousands of young people decide that the work is a good choice for them. Then this kind of event happens...........I liken it to the fever of war on some level. To prove oneself, excitement, glory, and $$$.

I know that they died from the superheated air, and lack of breathing in this situation. The horrible death that one knows is happening...it is heartbreaking, tragic, and terrible.

I mourn for these young men. I know that these are the best, brightest, and most talented......

I mourn for the families, the communities loss, the fire fighters nationwide, and I remember many others lost to fire...Storm Mountain, 30 Mile Creek, to name a few. Some are killed, and others have their lives changed forever.

Something terrible happened, too fast to react as they are trained.......and I understand. Gone too soon.........

Wow, The Fourth of July is Coming

Monday, July 1, 2013

We are having a really hot spell...unseasonably hot! The last 4 days have been taken over with harvesting our grass hay. 611+ bales...all in the barn today. Oh, and BTW...our bees are not happy in this heat...I was stung today when I was standing about 20 ft from the hive...not fun!
