A Woman's Tribe

Friday, November 29, 2013

"Relationships should help you, not hurt you. Surround yourself with people who reflect the person you want to be. Choose friends who you are proud to know, people you admire, who love and respect you, people who make your day brighter simply by being in it. Life is too short to spend time with people who suck the happiness right out of you." this is an excerpt from The How of Happiness.

My wisdom has taught me that this message is one lesson that can be hard to learn. I am searching for my tribe, the people who will make my life better just by knowing them. My Brave Girl Tribe from November 2013, was just such women. I am better because they are in my life.

A Time for Gratitude...

Tuesday, November 26, 2013

My forefathers and mothers were among the first Pilgrims in Massachusetts. I am certain that they had much to be grateful for, 1. Being alive in the new colony. 2. That the Native Americans helped them in many ways. We each have personal reasons for our enjoyment or not of this holiday. I am going to be busy the next 5 days for so, guests, dinner party...you know. However, I am posting images from the Graphics Fairy, free to use and printable...enjoy.

Fabric...is it an addiction?

Sunday, November 24, 2013
via pinterest

Many of you know exactly what I mean...seriously, the addictive qualities for many a fabric artist, seamstress, quilters, crafters..... My goodness, it is a very good thing that the best fabric store is over 3 hour drive from my home. Whenever I go there it is overwhelming. Luckily, I only make it about 2 times each year...and I usually have a specific item to look for. This place is Fabric Depot in Portland, Oregon. They advertise that they are the largest fabric store (indoor square feet of space) in the USA. I think that if you can't find it there, you will have trouble. Home decor fabric isn't included, honestly though, I have seen upholstery stores with way more drapery and upholstery fabrics.

Finding Beauty....

Ree Drummond's Cookbooks

Thursday, November 21, 2013

I am a huge fan of Ree's. Her cookbook are user friendly, and hubby really likes her recipes. She helps me out...I turn to her cookbooks first. Her Comfort Meatballs are terrific. Really, make it sometime....and consider giving these cookbooks for gifts. Well, I am back to making a shopping list for Thanksgiving.

Forecast ---- Freezing Fog ---- Ugh!

Wednesday, November 20, 2013

Freezing fog is coming for the next several days. Where I live on High Prairie we are normally too high in elevation, and are above the fog. Not tonight, it is here and it is going to be cold (for here) 26 degrees. The road department has covered the pavement with the chemicals that stop ice from forming on the roads. This stuff works pretty good, and it's going to get a good test tonight. I drained the hoses and put them away. The cattle are well fed. I am thawing some stew meat for tomorrow's crock pot. There is plenty of firewood in the house for the morning. The new fireplace insert works very well, I like wood heat, it just feels warmer than electric heat. It looks like some time at home to craft, clean, read, and plan for Thanksgiving. A good thing really.

Happy! And A New Camp!

Tuesday, November 19, 2013

This HAPPY sign is in the Art Barn at Brave River Ranch (Idaho) where Brave Girls Camp is held about 10 times each year. It was created for a wedding reception at the ranch just a few days before the camp I attended. Just out today, 2 new camps this winter. These are an addition to the online Soul Comfort class. When I was at camp, we did a new project and it was fun! Hint, it involves sewing, stitching, and creating something unique for yourself. It is going to be great, and many of my Brave Sisters are signing up. I think that I need to save that money, and do the online class.

DIY Bracelet Ideas

I have so many ideas for crafting, and found another one. This could be a quick gift idea, it looks pretty simple to make these. Honestly WTF

Wishing to be Camping

Friday, November 15, 2013

Fall is here, the leaves are almost gone, there is frost in the mornings, and the house is always cold. I am wearing extra layers of clothing, and no longer sit on the patio to dry my hair. I have begun Christmas shopping, and we are planning a Thanksgiving Dinner here on High Prairie.

Still, I long for a nice day for camping, and a lovely campfire. I must settle for the fireplace and some marsh mellows. Maybe a Stew, or nice hot meal at home instead of hot dogs over the fire.

A time to complete some crafts that have been postponed. I finished two projects today, hemming fabric for a picnic tablecloth, making over a tray for a gift.

Coca-Cola...Hum!

Tuesday, November 12, 2013

Why a post about Coca-Cola? When I was in Boise last week...we made a thrift store stop.

I found a 1950's vintage Coca-Cola metal picnic chest at a thrift store. It was in much better condition than this one. I think indoor storage in the high desert climate was the reason for looking very good. I find that these are normally quite rusty here in Western Oregon. I know that these sell for $200 to $300 in antique stores in western Oregon. This fact was confirmed by many gals from other areas of the United States. So... the price was really much lower. The manager told me that he had just put it out a few minutes earlier. I think that it will be a wonderful addition to my vintage trailer. All the gals loved this find! I had my SUV and thus bringing it home was not a problem. Now, I am thinking that it might be stolen from a campsite...maybe I will resell it to one of the other gals in Sisters on the Fly.

Home From Brave Girls Camp 2013

Monday, November 11, 2013

My experience at Brave Girls Camp these past several days was extraordinary. That is the only way I can describe it. I doubt that I will go again, nothing can compare to this last week. Far superior to my camp experience in 2012. It turns out that last year there was a significant illness with Melody Ross, legal problems with audits, and almost losing a leased property (by having it sold while they still had a valid lease), no wonder the camp wasn't as good as I anticipated last fall. This year I almost didn't go...however, I wanted a vacation...to get away from home. I'm not saying we wore anything like this picture. It isn't like that at all. All of the campers were on their paths for finding their authentic self, or dealing with life challenges. (think - widowed, divorced, difficult life situations) This had as many meanings as we had campers.  We all had the opportunity to create a vision book and make choices for our futures.  To share wishes for the campers.

This is my wish to my camp friends that I want to share with you.

Be Kind, Be Gentle, and Be Loving to Yourself.

Brave Girls Art Camp

Saturday, November 9, 2013

A message from Brave Girls Camp to you.

Give everything you've got as a act of love to your own self, because it feels good.  Be the best, happiest, most generous person you have ever met simply for the joy it brings you.  Any wonderful response you get back will just be an added bonus - not something you expect or even hope will happen.

Try it Brave Girl. You will be amazing and you might even get addicted to this way of living. It's where the good stuff is.

Crafting Vintage Snowmen

Wednesday, November 6, 2013

Karen Valentine shared a lovely post on her blog about crafting Vintage Snowmen. I haven't even thought about crafting for Christmas...however her tutorial is great...and maybe you will enjoy her ideas. I also want to tell you that she does a great job "spiffing up" blogs. She create one of a kind headers and features for your blog, completely personalized. She did mine...and I love it. Her blog is **My Desert Cottage**  check it out!!

Chanterelles - A Lovely Fungi

Tuesday, November 5, 2013

These wonderful wild mushrooms are in peak season right now. If you live in the Pacific Northwest, they are abundant in second growth Douglas-fir forests. The bright yellow makes them easy to find. Hubby and I drove about 5 miles from our home (to public land, Willamette National Forest) and found a bunch this afternoon. They are best eaten while fresh...however, they do dry very well in a dehydrator. They are many recipes online to peruse. My favorite is Cream of Chanterelle Soup. Hubby likes them sauteed as a side dish or to put on omelets and such. The mushrooms are available in specialty grocers at a high price, so you can taste them in a dish.

Making Wine Stoppers from Trophies

Monday, November 4, 2013

I saw these Trophy Wine Stoppers at the Coburg Antiques Show. I was even silly enough to buy one of the lower priced. I forgot all about this fun little crafting idea for awhile. They are a fun and easy project for gifts...better if you can use a trophy that the person actually won. I made one out of a horse trophy that I found last week...super easy craft project.

Going Somewhere? Yep

by Kelly Rae Roberts
Yes, I am heading out on a trip. Where? To an Art Camp. I am very happy, although the weather could be better....I am driving, to Idaho. On the way I am making a quick stop, to get my Stetson shaped at Idaho's Cowboy Supply, in Caldwell. Of course, I never know what I will find along the way. Great places to see, and ??
