Vintage Ceramic Rose Canister

My junking hobby strikes again. A beautiful vintage ceramic rose canister....  My find is square shaped (5 1/2") ...but just the same. This lovely thing is a 1920's to 30's Japan made item.  The surprising thing is that it has no chips. I made a happy home for it in my craft studio, and holds some snacks for me. I love it!

Now, a little update on my visit at my Dermatologist. I had the Levulan blue light treatment on my face. It was very painful, and continued to be very painful for 48 hours. There was no numbing done. My entire face was beet red, swollen, hot, and painful. I found those first 2 days miserable. I took ibuprofen and had ice for holding on my hot skin. It is now 3 days, and I am better. I still look terrible..but it isn't painful.  I am very red in the spots where my skin had cells that would become cancer in the future. I am hopeful that I will have a good outcome following healing.

Ideas for Vintage Planters

Thursday, November 2, 2017

I am a thrifter, junker, and I am always thinking of ideas to use things in new ways. I do have a McCoy planter collection. I collect mostly this white color, the clay is a white color...and they used a clear glaze. The pieces will often have crazing, or crackling inside the planter. These are used for office items and storing of small things. I think that this is a good idea, business cards, paper clips, pens, pencils, and other items.

Hull Pottery Pitcher and Shakers

Via Pinterest

I was out and about....junking is my hobby. I found this cute Hull pitcher....but not the shakers. I have not be able to find out much with my research. I think that these are 1950's era. They are a heavy pottery made with white clay. The pitcher joins my mid-century USA pottery collection...and is one of the few items with decorative hand painted flowers on them.

I have been planting tulips for next spring. I did get my garlic planted a few days ago. The patio umbrellas, rugs, chairs and decorative items are put away until next spring. The pool has been cleaned and prepped for the winter. There are more things to be done, pruning and removing dead foliage and plants.

Treadle Sewing Machine Base

Friday, August 25, 2017

Today's junking adventure was rewarding. I found an old cast iron treadle sewing machine base for cheap. I want to use it outdoors as a potting table. It is shorter than this one, so I think that a wood frame to add some height, and maybe I can find a thick chunk of wood for the top, or a big flat rock of some kind for the top. I want to be able to leave it outdoors year around. I will see what turns up...I will make something with this.

Junking...Finding a True Treasure.....

Saturday, September 24, 2016

Hi Girlfriends, I stopped at a Garage Sale today...just being kinda nosy, this home just sold for $650,000. These people might have some good junk. Maybe, something might catch my eye.  There was not much there, because today was the last day. The people had some vintage silver plate for sale...this little creamer deserved a good look. Well, it was marked sterling silver and looked to be high quality...for $5. Yes, 5 Dollars....I thought the price was extremely low and purchased it. I thought that I might put pens in it...or something.

I took a good look at it later, and used my jewelers loop. I was very surprised! This item is a Tiffany and Co, 1938, Hamilton, sterling silver creamer. Wow! When I had a chance I looked online at Replacements.com for information. There currently two of these for sale on their website for between $370 - $499. Wow! This is great! I am going to see about selling it to them. You never know what you might come across at a garage sale....and I didn't play the lottery. LOL!

Minnehaha Vintage Print by F R Harper

Monday, August 29, 2016

I did a little junkquing on Saturday after a wonderful vintage faire/flea market in Cottage Grove, OR. I found this pretty print in the original frame with the mounting. It is 7" x 6". I got it cheap and then researched the print. It is a work of F R Harper, done about 1920, named Minnehaha. The one I have is cropped a bit on top and bottom, the sun and most of the rock are removed. This kind of thing is typical of the era. This was art for the masses, kind of like posters today. Many prints were included in calendar art.

I learned much of this information from my sister, she has been collecting this art for about 20 years. We used to look at many prints at antique stores, and I learned so much. The vintage frame is pretty collectible, so for her that is very important. This small print is made to be viewed up close, and probably within a collection of similar art. A mini art gallery, if you will. Affordable and fun!

Vintage Camping Stuff...the Snack-Toaster

Saturday, August 6, 2016

I went to the Brownsville, Oregon antique/junk faire today. This pretty little town has held this event for 25 years, and I have been many times, it is always the first Saturday in August. The event is held in Pioneer Park where there are many lovely large Maples and grass. There was lots of good stuff and the prices are good. One vendor had some old camping stuff, and vintage things that caught my attention. I saw her booth as I entered the park, looked at some things but decided to look at all the booths before making a purchase. You see, I only had $40 with me as a budget measure. I was tempted by other things that I saw....but didn't buy anything. My last stop was back to the old camping stuff. She still had the things that I liked. A price negotiation and the deal done.

This photo is not mine, and my item is a double unit, to make 2 sandwiches at the same time. These are from about 1958-1962, made in the USA. The maker was Federal Mfg, of Brooklyn NY. Mine has been used maybe one time.

Many families had these for camping. I don't really remember using this with my family, I didn't have one until about 1976 (I still have it and it is in my trailer). I did some research on these devises and found that it is a unusual collecting item...although the history and value is hard to find. Hum?

Vintage Pendleton Blankets

Sunday, September 6, 2015

Pendleton Woolen Mills are located in Oregon and Washington, USA. I have toured the Camas, Washington mill and the process of making these incredible blankets is amazing. About 35 years ago the mill had a outlet, seconds store on the site. I purchased several blankets there. I got an extra large Chief Joseph Ivory blanket, that I use on a king size bed. They would make some blankets out of various odds and ends of yarn, kind of like a camp blanket...except there was no pattern, just stripes, and each blanket ended up one of a kind. These were only sold there. I purchased one of those also, it is a double bed size, the colors are lovely whites and grays, truly lovely. They had no tags from the outlet store, but of course I know where they came from, and that it was 1980. I still have lengths of plaid wool, to use for sewing.

The blankets that Pendleton makes are made to be used for generations. Sometimes the blankets end up at junk stores, and thrift stores. A true junker, and lover of these items....I always check for the blankets. I have touched enough to be able to tell a quality blanket from feel. There are times when I find one that is in wonderful condition, no mouse or moth holes, fringe intact and worth the small price to acquire.

I found a blanket identical to this photo, at a thrift store's 1/2 off sale. I did buy it. The nights suddenly are colder, and it is under the bedspread to cover me. Wool is wonderfully warm, and comfortable to sleep under. Fellow junkers....keep your eye out for these beauties. It is difficult to date them, there is a symbol for wool, that has only been on the tags since 1964. The Beaver State tag is older than that. The leather tags are currently used on these blankets... motor robes.

1963 Schwinn Starlet Bicycle

Friday, September 4, 2015

I went out junking this week, after doing my errands and shopping. Goodwill had this bike in the rack of used bikes for sale. I really liked this Flamboyant Blue Schwinn (that is what they named this color). This bike was made in the Chicago Schwinn factory on 6/26/1963, and when it was new, the cost was $46.95.

It is not all original, and the front rack and head light are gone. That is OK, the basics are there and in decent condition. I cleaned it today, and added air to the tires. I took it to the local bike shop and they assisted me with a few things...and I purchased the front basket from them. They are great at the Willamette Mountain Mercantile. They specialized in Mountain Trail Bikes, but will help with other bikes. In fact, the woman working there really loved this vintage bike...and she wants to find one for her own mom.

This bicycle is the same era as my 1963 Vintage Aloha Trailer. Hum...serendipity......I will have fun taking it with me on Glamping trips.

I was Junking Yesterday and look at this....

Vintage Tablecloth Love

Saturday, January 10, 2015
from Pinterest

I have this serious problem with vintage fabric, and tablecloths is the worst one of all. Seriously girlfriends, I am totally in love with great mid-century screen printed, and made in the USA tablecloths. This week I found several at the local thrift store. I stopped by on Thursday, early afternoon, just as they were putting out the new stuff. The hunt is on...and checking out the carts and racks before the stuff is put out is where the great stuff is...before anyone else has had a chance!  So, OK, there is this cart with fabric wrapped around 2 long cardboard rolls, hum, what is this? I pick one up and unroll it a little.........hum, looks like vintage fabric, it is hemmed, strange enough...I completely removed it..........and...........a vintage tablecloth, and there is another cardboard roll. The same thing..............only there are several tablecloths on the roll.  I think that I have found several tablecloths, still new on the roll. Of course, with my addiction, I have to purchase them.  When I get outside to my car, I take a minute to fully look at them. There are 4 total. All were unique, and each mainly floral. Not new, as the tags were tattered. The fabric was in great shape, good color, no holes, rips, and a few spots.  I have chanced upon another woman's collection, lovingly cared for by putting them on the cardboard rolls. This method keeps the fabric from having fold lines, were deterioration occurs. I put them on display with others, in the kitchen area, to enjoy for a while.

Vintage Pin Cushion...Cute Little Dog

Thursday, January 23, 2014

I was out and about to the junk stores in my very small town (pop 3000) and came across a small dog pincushion. This picture is larger than life of the cute dog. Mine is missing the tape measure, but it still has a few pins, and the made in Japan label. I think that it from the 1950's. It reminds me of the little sewing treasures that my mother had.  This particular store sometimes has old sewing trims, and vintage fabric... and I love to get these things to craft with. The best part is the price, very little...........fifty cents for several items...total.

Vintage Stetson! For Me!

Monday, October 21, 2013

Well, what's a road trip without a little shopping and junking? Not much as far as I'm concerned. A passion for finding stuff.....an addiction? Probably....what can I say....guilty as charged. That is an admission of fact, and Sis likes it as well.

Here is my best find by far...out in cowboy ranch country.... the Bend Goodwill is a great store to visit. While I was strolling along the Halloween Costume Aisle, what to my surprise!!! A vintage Stetson 4X Beaver Hat, hum. Well, it was the right size, clean, very lightly used..and needs a good shaping. The price was under $5, compare that to Ebay at $100 to $250 for the same hat. Of course I had to get it, a girl needs her hats...and at that price...it was totally affordable!!! I can wear it, and have fun with it! Watch out fellow Sisters on the Fly!

The main problem is getting it shaped, there just isn't much around this area. Maybe, Portland, or somewhere on my way to Boise. I will be driving thru some true cowboy towns along the way....hum...I've gotta make some calls to Burns Oregon, and Caldwell Idaho.

September Glamping Retreat

Monday, September 30, 2013

I just returned home from a 5 day Glamping Retreat. I met up with some gals and we camped together, near Sisters Oregon. The area is beautiful, and there are many activities. It rained lightly over the weekend. Meanwhile on the home front....it poured about 4 inches of rain. This is just a quick photo of my water heating pots or coffee pots. The travel mug is in the photo to give you an idea of the sizes. The tiny pot heats just enough water for the travel mug...and very quickly too. The large blue has been living with us for a long time now, and going on many trips. I just have to make certain that it is totally dry, or it will rust inside.  A junking and antique trip to nearby Redmond was really fun...and I found....next time...........
